Regarding Newgrounds

Posted by Suirano - May 18th, 2019

So like, I legitimately keep forgetting I have an account here and forget to post here fairly often. But since I am here, I suppose I should share how I feel about Newgrounds now that I have been here a little bit.

The site is alright because I feel safe posting here and not worrying about Nintendo DMCAing me like they did on Twitter. The fact I can post all my art here with no worries is nice HOWEVER this site has A LOT of cons for me as well. I do not remotely like the rating system. I do not feel it offers any benefit at all in terms of learning how you do and to improve and if anything will just demotivate people. For me specifically, I have seen the rating system just used to downvote artists that people do not like. It doesn't motivate anyone. ( This argument is often used on the like button as well ). Newgrounds overall is alright but could be better. I hope it grows, gets more traffic and becomes an amazing place for creators of all forms.

Newgrounds is alright but could be much better and I hope it does become better. I just want something to be on that is growing and IS NOT TWITTER.

the voting system can be used for good, this is why the site encourages good people to review, because their reviews count for more. it is a bit flawed tho....

Yeah, in my post I even comment on how the arguments I had for my dislike of the rating system could be applied to likes as well. Neither is perfect but it is just a minor complaint on my end. Honestly I just want Newgrounds to grow and become bigger because I want any platform I feel safe on and not be on Twitter. I do not trust Twitter whatsoever.

Constructive criticism is always important and despite your personal gripes I do hope you keep posting here and also you can share these thoughts with Tom Fulp if you want to and maybe suggest to him something to encourage. Besides I think Newgrounds is in the best place it has ever since the end of last year with lots of artists migrating from dead tumblr and by word of mouth. And dont forget Newgrounds hosts a lot of art contests and chance to collab with others.

Constructive criticism is definitely good and I encourage it. However rating a 1 and saying something like " this sucks" or " What the fuck is this?" is not constructive criticism which many tends to do with works they do not like.

@Ranyx32 @Suirano that's an example. The entire voting system should not be changed because of people who abuse it and act stupid. People will always do that. The rating system is great, because it encourages you to give actual feedback instead of just praising and saying "wow great keep it up" like on pretty much every other site. Just because you've seen bad people using it badly doesn't mean it's bad.

The same could be said without needing one. Why should a rating system be needed if you are going to offer worded criticism in the first place. If your objective is to actually offer that, you will give information on what you believe would be beneficial to the art to where that rating system is irrelevant. Also with your comment of "wow great, keep it up" That is also on this site with a rating of 5 and equally defeats the purpose of a rating system because it doesn't offer any words of advice while also abusing the rating in more positive way. In the end, your entire argument can be used for why the rating system is meaningless.

@Suirano
Except a rating system is less vague than likes/dislikes. And when people see it, they see they have the ability to go somewhere in-between. It prompts you to analyze in more detail and can more accurately show what the general consensus on a submission is. I feel like, with a star voting system, you're automatically given more of a choice. And, yes, I agree about the 5-star abuse. But that's not the system's fault, it's the users. If we removed voting and EXP, people would still be doing that, just without stars, for the review stat. There's no way around it. Trust me, as someone who reviews, I strongly dislike (was gonna say despise, but it's hard to say when at the very least they're being positive) those reviews, it irks me because they're putting 0 effort and a couple minutes into something that I can spend literal hours on sometimes and that I have spent a long time attempting to review. I feel your pain, but the voting system is the best option in my opinion. Thank you for listening.

Regardless of how some sees it. There are many who abuse the rating system just like likes and dislikes. It would be one thing if the page owner had the ability to disable it similar to how Youtube, you are able to disable likes and dislikes and only receive comments. As I said before, I appreciate comments of constructive criticism, even harsh ones because it lets me see where I could improve. However receiving 1 star while receiving a comment like " Lol this sucks " or " What the fuck is this shit?" not only is for one a garbage comment but you also get the 1 star as well nullifying its purpose because it harms your overall rating. I can understand the benefits of a rating system. I do not personally like it.

I am not saying that the site should solely listen to me and remove it. Clearly it has done some benefits for those used to it and have used it. For me, it doesn't benefit anything in terms of improving my art that a detailed comment cannot express. I have received a lot of constructive criticism through Deviantart, Furaffinity, Tumblr, Twitter and even on Discord and none uses a rating system. That is why for me, I do not see its significance.

@Ranyx32 @Suirano Well I am a graphic designer an artists my self and i know the difference when someone puts real feedback when it comes to a one star rating and when someone is just being a total dick if you dont have anything nice to say or constructive just leave your one star and STFU lol

I suppose the feedback is the main reason that the star system didn't hold much to me. It being there or not, people who wanna give criticism will and those that hate you will for some unknown reason still be irritating about it. Like I said to another response, I may not like it but its not like I hold power to determine it remaining or going away. People often ask how I felt about Newgrounds so I was just giving my view of it, that's all.

@TheRoboTrickster @Suirano @Suirano regardless i still appreciate your posting here when you can

That is true, and it's great that you're using the site a bit more. Though one upside to the voting system is that a review is required for it, and it's even better that the negative votes require a more well thought out review. But I can see what you mean in how it could be improved upon.

Yeah. Newgrounds as a whole could be improved. I am not saying I hate the site or anything. I have personally never been a fan of 5 star rating systems on any site but I am not saying that it needs to be completely removed. Personally if one just had the option to enable or disable, that would be fine. It is just an extremely minor complaint I have mostly.

@fdawer @Suirano really social media is just picking your poison. They all have shif but good stuff... like tumblr, twitter and Instagram all have their flaws.

@ponchoman8 @Suirano That's understandable, and would be a rather useful feature.
